‘DZUD’ is a half-hour documentary exploring climate change’s impact on Mongolian herders.
The title references the Mongolian term for an ever-increasing phenomenon: a viciously hot summer followed by an equally harsh and unnaturally long winter. These summers degrade pasture quality, resulting in malnourished livestock dying in their thousands over the winters.
As climate change causes more frequent dzuds, herders fear a permanent end to an ancient but increasingly economically unviable way of life.
